The 2017 Watergate Bay Sup Surf championship was a stand-out event for numerous reasons. With titles on the line and highly competitive fleets including the largest women’s fleet in BSUPA history, it was an event that promised action you wouldn’t want to miss.

There are two international events requiring Team England selection in SUP surf, race and prone paddle board disciplines. Given that the surf SUP team has already been selected from the previous British Stand Up Paddle Board Association (BSUPA) surf series the race team has yet to be selected. Ideally, it would be preferable for all race disciplines to follow a comparable process however, there are a number of factors which impinge upon doing so. The following will outline the process involved, clearly define selection criteria and importantly elaborate upon an improved collaborative approach with an ethos of bringing together a broader and more divers attendance.
In November, BSUPA Member Zoe and her friend Imogen noticed that one of their favourite locations for river SUP was being spoiled by an excess of litter. These two litter clearing trail blazers were not prepared to see their beautiful stretch of river succumb to this needless fate and bravely decided to do something about it with a SUP River Clean Up.
The final stage of the BSUPA SUP Surf Championships set a precedent for being the first SUP event ever at Fistral beach and provided competitors with some testing conditions off the bat. Strong onshore winds created a challenging environment that was met with ability and skill by the fleets.
The BSUPA National SUP Surf Championships in Watergate Bay took place on the weekend of the 23rd & 24th of September 2017. The weather gods produced the goods for the fleets with clean head high sets and light winds.

This Saturday the Kite SUP run is taking place on Hayling Island. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun and benefit the Armada Trust, so make sure you go along to join in. The Hayling Island Kite stage will take place at the start of the event with a lengthy down-winder to the running stage, followed by the SUP race in the leigh of the wind.
